Andrew Byrnes Emeritus Professor of International Law and Human Rights in the Faculty of Law and Justice at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia where he is also an associate of the Australian Human Rights Institute and the Ageing Futures Institute at UNSW. His work includes publications on the human rights of older persons, women’s human rights, gender and human rights, human rights and disability national human rights institutions, economic and social rights, peoples' tribunals and international law, and the incorporation of human rights in domestic law.

He has served as external legal adviser to the Australian Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights, serves on the Law Council of Australia’s Human Rights Committee and He has worked with the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions as an adviser in the ongoing discussions on a possible new treaty on the human rights of older persons. He has also acted as a consultant to the United Nations on aspects of international human rights law including most recently the rights of older persons and the rights of persons with disabilities.
